I’ve always preferred hub gears, as they’re much more convenient for urban commuting - no getting caught in too high a gear when the lights go red. Largely maintenance free too, though if they do go wrong, it needs a professional
I have stepless on my e-bike, and despite the 400% range, I’m not sold

Yeah, tho in 7yrs with 1st Alfine hub gears & going smoothly & about to do it's 3rd oil change. So much less hassle all round IME.

I'm always put off by the slight extra complication to repairing rear punctures. Perhaps I should learn to get over it! The Bakfiets (2014-2017) and the Helios (2018) both had hub gears, and we did manage with them mostly.

Not sure what extra complication hub gears have to fix punctures. Loosen wheel, release gear cable & wheel drops out. When put back in, just do the reverse & no lining up the wheel to get derailleur gears to work smoothly.

"Release gear cable" - this is not a step with derailleurs! And I never have to adjust the cable when I put the wheel back in IME. If it really is that easy and you don't have to do any *adjusting* of said gear cable then perhaps I am worrying unnecessarily!

No adjusting cables when removing wheel then put it back. Cable just clips/screws into hub. Only time I adjust cable is when it stretches & turn a cable adjust to line up markers.

My 11 speed Alfine has the same gear range as my old 21 speed derailleurs had before I changed it. But then my e-Cruiser isn't really built for speed. 😂
