I think in reality we will may become a bit more like novel tech. The difficulty wont be in securing small grants as much as we think it will be; it will be ensuring that with any small grant people still retain trust for the science you output

The government is not a for-profit business and cannot be run like one. The people being fired are immensely competent and qualified. And small grants are not enough.

What I tell those people is that the Pentagon cannot account for 63% of it's >$4T (T as in trillion) in assets. That's inefficiency. That's where you can safe, if you really care about that.
