Definitely read Pynchon, Dodge, and Wolfe, and I think a few others. I want to look at your list in more detail when I get home; I've never been hooked by Le Guin, but I want to be. I'll probably take up the challenge then, too.
The Dispossessed may not be the one to convince you. The Left Hand Of Darkness takes a really interesting look at gender. Lavinia is a wonderful book that expanded on Aeneas in a way that Homer didn't. And the Annals of the Western Shore could be considered Earthsea-for-grownups
