Gotta give props to the writer of the Ambessa novel, must have not been easy to write a whole novel where the protagonist is, in general, not someone that reader will empathize with

I really don’t think it’s that hard. As long as you avoid certain kinds of bad behavior that are taboo, people really don’t care and are easily able to follow a narrative on a not good person as long as they’re a motivated, active one.
Sure but usually empathizing with the protagonist is a good way to keep the reader invested, being able to still do it for a protagonist that's barely even morally grey is definitely a bit more of a challenge 🤔
Idk I still wouldn't say it's much a challenge. Everyone in HBOs Rome, Tony soprano, Walter white, the penguin, Paul atreides, Tyrion Lannister, the punisher, Dr doom, everyone in blood meridian, every mob movie ever, everyone in mad men. People engage with motivated characters not moral characters.
