E.g. prison sentences of 20+ years are given for drug supply offences, when there is little evidence that they have any more deterrent than 10 year sentences.
That was the key message I tried to pass on when I participated in a roundtable with the Justice Committee last year. Everyone is talking about banning short custodial sentences and alternatives to prison, but that won't do much really, the problem is overpunitiveness of serious offences.
