A useful rule is that you need to do this from a different phone from the one you were called on. This gets over the issue with landlines where if the caller doesn't hang up they keep the line open.

When you get through the computer asks you to say the name of the bank you want to contact.

How does this work? How does my dialling 159 know what bank I use? Is it because my bank has my number and if there’s a call from it to the 159 service is connects my phone number & bank, putting me through to a fraud team at that bank?

Never provide personal information on an incoming call, whether it's a bank or not. Use the bank website, and login securely to get information or make changes.

If your bank doesn't offer the services you need electronically today, switch to a bank that exists in the 21st century.

Yeah just had a painful conversation with them, tried to tell me it was my banks fault. They eventually passed it on to another team to investigate. I won't hold my breath - it's like the national emergency alert thing all over again - that didn't work for me either

Please be aware that this does NOT guarantee you are safe if using a landline, a lot of scammers will happily allow you to call your bank because they will pretend to hang up and play a dial tone down the phone, no matter what number you dial they will still be on the line.

Your bank will never call you. If you get a call saying they are your bank, hang up, it's a scam (unless you asked them to call of course).

Not true. I've been called by ours to check a suspicious transaction. They identified me, and melery needed me to confirm 4 transactions with yes or no, 2 were genuine, 2 were attempted scams. They will never call you and ask for your security info.

Barclays called me and asked for security info, which I refused to provide as I had no way of knowing if it was a genuine call. I hung up & rang Barclays (using a different phone) & told them it was very bad of them to ask for security when they’d called me. It turns out that the call was genuine.

Yeah, my bank has called me from time to time over past 30yrs & verified who they were as they have my registered mobile number. Once verified who they are, they then asked questions to verify me, normally by payment patterns like direct debits.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think that if they have called you, putting the phone down does not disconnect the line so with a carefully crafted scam dialling 159 on a live line would still be the scammers at the other end.

You need to call on a different line to be sure.

That's only the case with landlines, and even then the connection will be disconnected by the network 2 minutes after you put the phone on the hook so you'd just need to wait a bit
