Right now it's looking like a fusion of Miyamoto's original Donkey Kong design and Rare's. The goofy face is all there, but he still has that dark, cavernous brow.

Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world that thinks Rare's design of Donkey Kong is abysmal. I didn't like him in DKC promotion art back then because he looked like a pile of primitive shapes wrapped in tree bark. He's looked the same to me ever since.

It's objectively better, simply because the current Donkey Kong is always a protagonist. The original design was as an antagonist.

That's why his eyes look kinda creepy and menacing.

The Rare design is friendly, yet heroic.
