I managed a Salvation Army thrift store for 4 years. I can vouch for that. One thing I’ve learned. Having money and or privilege doesn’t necessarily make you a good person.
I challenge anybody who thinks that people on SSI or Social Security and food stamps are gaming the system, to locate your local Housing Authority and have a seat in the lobby and see if you can pick out which ones are gaming the system. I bet you'll be donating clothes before the end of the day.
When I was in Iraq in 03, one of my buddies did just that, bought what he thought was a knockoff Rolex from a street vendor for $10. When he got back to Germany, he had it appraised on a whim, it turned out to be the real deal with a $5500 pricetag.
I have a Wilson's leather jacket from one if their fashion lines because I found it at Goodwill for $4. My spouse has a designer bag they found at a thrift shop for $10. Once of the local agencies that helps us often gets prom dresses and other nice clothes that people only wear once.
I volunteer with a local organization that has a food bank. Some of the people that we see asking for help today are people that donated last year. Food insecurity is real & knows not of geography. Please donate if you can
We even have a place here that is funded publicly and privately, where people donate cars for those who are in need of transportation to get back and forth to work. I have seen some jazzy little cars there. 🥰
I have nice clothes because I look for them in thrift stores & consignment shops. Examples: Tommy Bahama dress, tags still on, $6.00, Frye boots, looks like maybe worn once, $50.00. I have a closet full of stuff like this. I’m on a fixed budget but don’t dress like it. 😉
And garage sales have fabulous buys. A rich family sent their daughter to college but she didn't want to move back home afterwards, so her mom got mad and sold all her things. Her clothes were all designers. Her mom sold me 4 boxes of her clothes for 20 dollars. I hit the jackpot.🥰🥰🥰
I got a couple brand new Polo brand polo shirts at a Salvation Army a few years ago for like $5. I was also shocked to see some good values on high quality clothes at last years village wide yard sale.
They're dumbasses that don't think, and they just like to spread their bitterness.
And, you know, some of these people don't know the value of things. My neighbor went to the Salvation Army store and they had a box of ties, mostly Ralph Lauren, and they wanted a dollar each. He bought them all. Even an ugly one runs about 125.00😄😄
Exactly, I went in the shop looking for something else, a lamp I think it was, then saw the shirts and was like these shirts look brand new. Didn't get a lamp but I got a couple shirts for casual Fridays. And there are thrift shops everywhere.
I have 2 of them within a mile or 2, and one has a section with a lot of items for the elderly, I bring my dad there a few times a year. And I usually end up buying something myself.
