I struggled with this, I really did. Took me several takes, because I kept either falling over my words or breaking down. I'm so sad, and I'm so angry. I just started crying again just a minute ago as I navigated the Pasadena Humane Society's site to donate again.

The fires are hitting me hard bc of family and friends, but it isn't just the fires. It's Gaza, it's shitbags like Musk and Bezos and Trump pillaging us for what exactly I don't know, it's AI/LLM bullshit, it's so so so much. Too much.

And LH is just a books website, this is just a books podcast. It's more than that—books are more than just books, IYKYK—but I keep feeling waves of "what the fuck do I do, what can I actually do??" And I know the simple answers: donating, volunteering, shopping local, less plastic, etc.

Words are just words, after all. Posting isn't activism, it's barely action—and podcasting can't be much better. It's my job and I have to believe in it, to believe that words DO matter, but it's hard to believe that mine can or will in the face of such massive awfulness.

But if I feel this way—helpless, overwhelmed, fucking furious, ultimately incapable of holding this immense grief for so so so much and so so so many in my little human brain—then I imagine a lot of other people do too. Maybe you're one of them.

So it does feel important, if also small potatoes, to say that I'm angry and I'm sad and I'm done hiding it.

To say that if you too feel like this, you aren't alone in it.

I don't know how to get through this except to say that we'll do it together. Even if we never meet, we're in this together.
