One wonders why war is such a common backdrop in space scifi (and scifi in general). It's really so trite to have a literal universe of possibility and go with the "people shooting at each other" angle that's been done ad infinitum.

I don't think a lot of them come at it wanting to write a sci-fi story and landing on war as the best option.
I think most of them want to write war, and sci-fi lets them do it without alienating any particular nationality.
