When they build huge skyscrapers, are the mobility-impaired people allowed to evacuate by elevator or do they have to try to walk down several flights of stairs? I once worked on the 11th floor in London & fire evacuation was difficult for me having MS.

If there is an emergency that affects the building, no one can use the elevator. You are at the mercy of people around you to help get you down the stairs.

All the big buildings I've been to for doctor's visits say no matter what don't use the elevator in an evacuation which seems unfair and impossible for some. I use a cane so I might be able to rough the stairs on a good pain day but someone in a wheelchair?? 😭

It’s not unfair. They’re trying to keep you from being trapped in the elevator shaft.

I’ve been in emergency drills at big Kaiser buildings where everyone ran out and I just stopped by the stairs waiting for someone to help. ♿️ They never did. I know I would die.

I see, that makes sense. Getting trapped in an elevator is not fun (my uncle got stick in the elevator once but it wasn't during an evacuation). I do think it's unfair that no one thinks to help disabled people/how others may not find stairs accesible. Thank you for your addition to this topic!

In a medical building, staff are supposed to help disabled people. But in my experience, they don’t.

That's such a real question fr. I wouldn't be able to, I would just be forced to give in and let the emergency take me ig ;; which is sad to think about and scary too ..
