Guru Nanak Kitchen in Edinburgh was handing out free meals and I asked if it was OK to take one even though I could afford to buy something. They told me firmly that it was important that people who didn't NEED free food took it, so that those who did NEED it could take without feeling exposed.

You've to take/accept only as much as you can eat.
If u waste food, u'll be given a polite lecture & made to feel really reallllly reeeallly awful.
I should know, once couldn't finish my plate🫣(for valid reasons).
I NEVER forget it now.

My husband and I might show up on NYE in white tie and top hats, and with our own reusable silverware, chrystal and fine china. May we bring 0% alcohol "champaigne" to share? We can bless the kitchen (and make a hefty donation to help cover all the groceries etc). We want to meet our neighbours.

you can always come, don't bring anything. Use those things to pass it on separately if you wish to. The act of preparing and serving people is part of the point, china and drinks won't really help, esp because unless youre bringing enough for everyone they won't serve anyone what another won't get

Fair. I only have enough family china to serve 28. We'll drop in to socialize on a casual Friday then and do NYE in style elsewhere. We'll still have what others won't get, just elsewhere, so it doesn't solve the bigger economic segregation problem. Our society needs to work on that together.

Three years ago my small town of Hope, BC, was completely cut off by land due to major flooding and landslides. The gurdwara in Abbotsford, BC, flew in hundreds of hot meals for the travelers stranded there. It was amazing. Of course, the anti-Sikh bigots in town never remember that.

I’ve worked in disaster response and without fail when something big goes down the nearest gurudwara will be there feeding people within a day. I worked one where they chartered aircraft to fly food in to people who were cut off. Great people living their values.

When I was in churchworld the local gurudwara was the perfect example on how you do community outreach and just let people know that you're there and you want to help.

I know no community is a monolith, but as far as outreach and engagement Sikhs really have their shit together.

My first exposure to the Sikh was Andrew Zimmerman's show. It is everything a good member of society should be, and really, it isn't even that hard. Feed the hungry, give solace to the mournful, take care of your fellow human and yourself. Defend the defenseless, and your family will defend you too.
