Also any resources and effort that we spend on going to a different plant should be spent a hundredfold keeping this one habitable. It makes no sense to go elsewhere while ruining the one we grew up on.

Oh I agree, and we're probably past the point of being able to afford to not engage in geoengineering, but that's a take I've seen from people of various levels of hinged on both sides of the political isle.

Yeah the anti-nuclear/science woowoo portions of the left are always something we need to reckon with. Personally I think those arise due to trying to escape the contradictions of capitalism by rejecting any part of it, so I am sympathetic

I was sympathetic. Then covid happened and I watched both the impact oh human lives of health woo, and many of them jump ship to the alt right because the sympathy to their beliefs in woo was more important to those people than any other political solidarity. So they lost mine.

Also, it's not really a zero sum thing here. We don't have to spend the same resources, and there's different things to get from both. Expanded human survival chances was always supposed to be the sales pitch to the normies who don't like science nerds.

The Mars stuff is a grift that goes even beyond that, because all indications are that a Mars colony is not possible, at least not with any near-term or medium-term tech. (i.e. humans can't survive in low gravity, extreme radiation, mars dirt is highly poisonous and a hundred other things).

That's the fundamental scam, to get money for a future project, usually the victim's retirement plans, on the grounds the victim won't be checking for awhile. No one would expect anything from a Mars Project, so they could take billions for research and come back asking for more.
