I feel like if people care enough about it to cancel their subscriptions, they also care enough to support people otherwise, it just kinda goes hand in hand I think... otherwise what's the point of cancelling ur subscription?

I go to my local record store every Saturday. if I hear something I really like on Spotify, I special order it if it’s not in stock there. Also it’s nice to get random recommendations from the employees who get to know your taste, yay human interaction!

Not who you asked, but generally—if an artist is on Bandcamp, that or through them directly is the best way to make sure they get most of the money you spend on their music. Merch is a great option too; it gives the artist both money and marketing. Concerts are generally the biggest “moneymaker”…

Oh sweet, I appreciate the response regardless! Most artists I listen to don't do in-person things (AFAIK), so it sounds like Bandcamp (or subscription) is the way to go. I imagine the single purchase of an album (let's say $20) outweighs an average person's/fan's lifetime (album) streams, or no?

To some degree it’s situation-dependent, but generally yes. As an example, Spotify pays $0.003-0.005 per stream. Let’s say each song is $1. That’s between 200-333 streams to equal out to one purchase. For me, it’s pretty rare that I get anywhere close to 200 listens over a decade (though not…

Also, almost no one will turn you down for just sending them money directly. If there’s an artist you love and you can afford it… why not? If you’re extra rich or the artist isn’t very big, you might even be able to afford a private concert!

One of my absolute favorite artists has a private gig option you can purchase on his website for not as much as I’d have expected. Unfortunately he’s across the pond, but if I didn’t have to worry about airfare and lodging, I’d 100% have bought one by now

adding to this: its worth noting that if you buy something on bandcamp, bandcamp *and* paypal still take cuts of that transaction, so if something is "pay what you want" or "pay $1 or more", its generally a good rule of thumb to pay a little bit more than the asking price for it

i feel like a lot of people dont understand that streaming royalties make up a good part of quite a lot of artists (especially independent ones) general income stream, you are still supporting us even if youre listening on spotify, apple music, youtube, etc

its easy to think that because spotify is paying 0.001 cents per stream or whatever that "it doesnt count" but if you add all those fraction of a cent streams up across platforms, thats an artists pay check at the end of the day

An artist makes far more on a single CD/Vinyl/Cassette sale than thousands of Spotify streams. Spotify is designed to enrich its' billionaire owner, not artists. Speak to musicians.

i can say confidently that a sale of a physical edition of one of my releases would not net me as much as i get currently in streaming revenue, and thats not including the up front cost of producing said goods that not every artist can afford
