It can take 30-40 years for a maple tree to grow mature enough to tap for maple syrup. We heard about sheriffs and road patrol taking chainsaws door-to-door to free people from their homes under collapsed trees, using a quarter of their annual budget in just a few days.

I stayed over in a motel in Petoskey last night where just about every other room was occupied by line workers in from all across the country to put up new poles and run miles and miles of power lines to try to restore power - as many residents are still out days later. (photos from @mlive.com)
