the reason they're targeting Trans people *is* because it is such a small community. it means most of the public have never met one, and that makes it a lot easier for the right wingers to villify them with false narratives and drum up fear. and for people ignore the harm aimed at them.

Exactly this. Fascism cannot exist without an "enemy", a scapegoat for all their problems; and the best "enemy" is one that cannot fight back.

Plus, thanks to centuries of religious bigotry, transpeople already exist outside the social norm, so it's much easier to demonize them.
