I think its like things turning into crabs and regardless of the path to get there they just end up trying it for a bit anyway? Overwatch is a clear reuse of the promised overwatch 2 stuff (and tested in a halloween mode last year), can't speak for apex but I feel like it had some proto attempt-
At adding them in like... arenas or something? And fortnite just likes sticking whatever new idea they have in for a year so its different and then ends up dropping it the next year (and was the first one out of the listed ones)
i think it started with picking perks in call of duty from a small list and some being better than others, then snowballed to the point where "pick something the other players cannot know your character is able to do until you do it" became, for some fucking reason, standard in PVP shooters
You can absolutely build an FPS around escalating power and builds, but you have to kinda build around that from the ground up - it feels like such a messy thing to slap on after-the-fact, when so many balancing and design concerns are already largely set-in-stone.
feeling bad for the devs because it seems like they want to make overwatch genuinely interesting and fun to play again but so much goodwill has been erased in recent years that i just don’t care to reinstall and try it again
At my most cynical it feels like a decision made to get around the fact that these games have distinct heroes for an audience who wants to be the same guy with a gun.
my most mean-spirited take is that giving players another button to flip mid-game to "build their own gameplay experience" looks good on an engagement spreadsheet or whatever
