In short? A domino effect of pop culture osmosis and long-term story effects surrounding her death (which became *the* turning point for the books) that led to her being mythologized.
It's easy to forget that the falling out between Peter and Ben prior to his death was an invention of Bendis and Raimi's respective work, rather than anything remotely longterm.
This is such bullshit. Every so often I do wonder how things are going in main continuity books and there hasn't been a single time where I've been: I have to check this out.
Hpw many times have they brought her back now 😭 they cloned her like 3 times, they got her sister, her daughter with advaced aging, im not even counting Spider-Gwen
I know the rule is “no one stays dead forever in comic books” but Gwen Stacy is one of those incredibly rare characters who are an exception to that rule

Yeah we know
This shit and the refusal to let Peter and MJ be a couple are pretty emblematic of the problems of modern Spider-Man.
If they had Peter and MJ get a divorce as a result of Peter’s actions I don’t think fans would have been as upset.
Ya know, like Into The Spider-Verse did. When Peter actually has to do some growing up and face responsibility.
