To be honest: I was never a fan. Too expensive on long journeys and negligible savings on short. A 5-minute interval in the timetable speeds things up the most, no matter which train you take.
BUT: It is of course an eye-catcher and a statement with a certain marketing value.
São Paulo's doing commuter rail, subway, monorail, trams, and Bus Rapid Transit all at once. This monorail will run a long stretch parallel to a commuter train route below. Not sure what that logic was.
And this one was originally planned to show off São Paulo by connecting airport to stadium around the 2014 World Cup. Getting close to done, only 11 years late. At least Rio got a new subway and BRT lines in time for the Olympics.

If they've found a way to make it affordable and effective then great but it's usually better to stick to regular rail
