In my experience they're also VERY quick to be the first person to relay their perspective to someone else, they want to make sure the first thing you hear is the most flattering version.

It’s frustrating and weird because one of the first things someone told me when talking about this specific person was “oh this is the second time I’ve heard they did something abhorrent” and I was like oh I could ask what the other thing is but then I look like I’m just fishing for drama.

That's what happened to me and my husband with someone we knew. They explained a situation to us and it wasn't until YEARS later that we found out the truth. We immediately cut all ties (not that there were many left anyway).
