And the thing is, they are going even beyond this and claiming that even private or non-federal government entities are subject to the will of the President if they interact with the federal government. An assertion that would give the president powers that most kings would have envied.

This is precisely the definition of authoritarian populism: elections confer a mandate to govern that transcends constitutional constraints. The “leader” as the embodiment of the general will. Problem: constitutional democracy demands horizontal accountability.
