The “Beyond the Aquila Rift” short story collection hooked me real hard. I definitely agree on some of it being a slog. Pushing Ice took me like 3 weeks to finish.
I read shadows of the apt cus I wanted a long series so I didn't have to think about what to read next for a while, but it really wasn't great. Liked final architecture though.
I almost said it had a "great cast". It's quite cinematic. He also manages to pull off the impossible feat where the trilogy has a very satisfying ending but you're dying to read the next installment.
Do yourself a favor and palette cleanse with one of his novellas. Elder Race is a beautiful and haunting story about loneliness and also a space anthropologist who people think is a wizard
