I disliked it the first time around for the exact same reasons I see happening today ~ Margaret Atwood is a seer, I guess its time to read Oryx and Crake
Some books stay with you and form part of your psyche. I never read the road. I find his lack of punctuation/capitalization interesting, though. I'd watch the film if it wasn't so realistic🙄
It was like Hemingway wrote the end of the world. The movie was just as upsetting. I saw it first and I don’t have any clue other than masochism as to why I then read it but I wish I hadn’t. I thought maybe the book would have less ambiguity but it didn’t.
Cormac McCarthy. Single most bleak look at the end of humanity ever conceived. And this would be out of a category of books about the end days. I can’t say I think about it every day but maybe every week my brain goes there and I get really upset. It traumatized me.
People are curious to read about our imminent future in America...
Get ready because it's coming in the next 4 years!
Gotta brush up on trad wife subservience...
Watch out if you're lucky enough to be fertile.
Imagine being held down by Melania while that Gross Orange Perv pounds away!
Yikes.
Margaret based that book on what Black and Indigenous women have already gone through. I'm tired of folks not listening to anything Black women say and then going out and reading that book. sorry to sound grumpy I'm in canada and have read it 9 times but I'm an Indian under the Indian Act.
We are doing our best
Carney was a massive boost for us
Will be so sad if we have to listen to that beady eyed finger pointing whiner from the PMs office
He is such a divisive presence
Never says a positive thing about anything
Smells a bit Trumpy
But the good news is that people are reading it! She wrote it during the Reagan administration, when Reagan was setting precedents for so many of the things Trump is doing now. It was easy to imagine her dystopian scenario coming true. Now it's all too horrifyingly close.
Unfortunately, it feels like the Constitution has already been suspended in the US. Just waiting for the next hit, and the next, and the next ... unless FOTUS is forcibly removed from office.
The Democratic Party's leadership has failed us. They have chosen to side with those who seek our destruction rather than stand with their ally, Israel.
Not surprising. What got me about the Handmaids Tale is that everything that's mentioned in the book has happened, sometime, somewhere on this planet, for real! It's not been made up! Atwood merely collected each of these real circumstances and events, and weaved them into a novel. Frightening!
I recognize that Atwood's contribution to writing, Canadian writing, feminist writing and literature in general is important, timeless, meritorious and without equal; but the fact of the matter is reading her is the literary equivalent of Klonopin and a double rum.
I read it ages ago and watched the series. People couldn’t understand why I got boggled when they said things like “I’m so blessed” or “have a blessed birthday.”
I picked up a copy of the book and the graphic novel. I'm scared (American who does NOT support Trump in the slightest and appreciates Canadians protesting us).

But it is a spectacular book. I just never thought the government would use it as a how to manual.
