My personal opinion, in short: BC should stick to growing cycling as sport + developing talent, grass roots up. Other orgs already cover cycling as 'transport' and campaigning for safer roads, and do it better. The obvious being CUK & Sustrans.

If they really want to jump on the campaigning bandwagon, then pool resources with the aforementioned where there is clear crossover, and work collaboratively rather than trying to do their own thing in isolation.

I think their diversification/loss of direction over last 5-10 years has been driven by a need for £££ from membership. And let's not mention the belief begging decision to have Shell Oil as main sponsor!

Strictly speaking, what did the damage was British Cycling being so morally bankrupt that they signed a deal with Shell, proving they care exclusively about money, and nothing else.

They were struggling way before the Shell sponsor fiasco. Membership = significant income, which plateaued some years ago - same for CUK. Diversifying was seen as a way to appeal to/poach some of the cross section of cycling types who could go either way with their membership/money.
