A simple, four sentence submission that says who you are, why you think it's a terrible bill, and that you want to make an oral submission to the committee is a MORE effective way to make your opinion known.

Template subs are all counted as a single submission, and very rarely will you be invited to speak to the committee if you make one. Creators of templates may mean well, but they are making the process less effective.

If you don't want to write something yourself, sign a petition, or see if you can sign your name to a group submission. I think the Greens are putting one together, and there are sure to be others.

Independent petitions are probably better on this, as it's harder to tie them to political parties and be dismissive the way this government clearly wants to.

And also, when submitting, remember that you're most likely talking to a Parliament Staffer, whose job it is to make sure you get to have your say. They don't work for the Government and they're not there because they want the Bill to pass. They're not the enemy,and you shouldn't treat them like it.

Great advice. Honestly, I find myself asking if there's any point with these things? Do submissions actually get read? Is this just a "we've already decided and we're only doing cause we have to" kinda thing?

If you edit the template is it picked up as a different submission (ie. because it fails an exact text match), or will it be aggregated with the other template responses because it appears the same?

The latter, usually. All the submissions are read manually, so it's not a trick of fooling a computer — so if it is substantively similar, as judged by the Committee and its officials, it goes in the form sub pile. So even if you add original content in, it's likely to be lumped in as a form.

If you're writing your own points, there's no real reason to include the template. You can say "I support the submission of X Organisation, and wish to add..."
