Your petition should always have a goal. If that goal is just to raise awareness of an issue, then the platform won't necessarily matter.But I think a good petition should be seeking a specific, achievable outcome. Once you've got that,you need to figure out where the petition should be addressed.2/

All parliamentary petitions are addressed to Parliament, so that's good and easy. Most local councils have information about how they can be petitioned on their websites, too. The change dot org petition about Destiny Church doesn't actually seem to be addressed to anyone, which is a red flag. 3/

You can petition the Government by addressing your (non-Parliamentary) petition to a Minister, the Prime Minister, and so on. And that might be an effective avenue, especially if it's a matter that a Minister can make a decision on. But, critically, there's no requirement for them to respond. 4/

Which is where the parliamentary petition comes in. A petition presented to the House of Representatives and accepted by an MP REQUIRES a response of some kind. At the very least, the petition will be considered by the Petitions Committee, and a report will be produced. 5/

That report can include recommendations to the Government, which the Government is required to respond to within 60 working days. It probably won't be with an announcement that they've done what you asked, but it's usually a paper with details about what they plan to do (or not do) and why. 6/

It's not a fast process, and it's not a shortcut to getting sweeping changes made against the wishes of the current Government. But it can, and DOES, make a difference.
