The low gravity of Mars makes the chances of it holding on to an atmosphere impossible. Not to mention the lack of a magnetic field which keeps the atmosphere from being stripped away.

The lack of magnetic field point is the strongest argument to abandon living on Mars unless we can figure out how to create one or if we decide that living in dome cities is what we want for any Mars colonies. Otherwise, it is a massive waste of earth resources.
