Exactly what do you think a depth/bench guy is supposed to look like?
I'm not arguing that he should be starting at 3b, but he's a still-solidly-above-league-avg bat who can play multiple INF positions. That's a valuable guy to carry on your bench to give guys days off and/or in case of injury.
Guy was a better than average player last year and should be a good clubhouse guy. If he puts up the same numbers he should be a better option than wisdom. Also if he took a team friendly deal then this a solid move.

By that metric he'd have been the Cubs 4th best hitter last year behind Suzuki, Happ and Busch.
He still hits perfectly well. Especially for what's almost certainly going to be a bench role.
He had 539 plate appearances last year.

And again, I don't think anyone is arguing that Turner should be playing 3b with any regularity.
But on occasion when Shaw needs a rest? Or in an emergency due to injury?
He's a good guy to have.
