Not an artist but i had a question about whether the submissions are protected and can't be used by wotc for reference or as a training set if they decide to use gen ai down the line?

I am just an illustrator for them and I very strongly don’t think so. This is based on my experience on how work flow and approvals (and back & forth dialog) of sketches, color studies, and final art go - There’s a lot of work behind the scenes.… 🧵

Even with the limitations of AI aside there are also copyright issues.

More than that I think folks who are just getting started perceive illustration business. We don’t just sling ideas at them and see what sticks. Clients come to us with a very specific idea, in the case of Magic they also 🧵

Provide 100 page world guide books, necessary references, info on what the card basically does etc. what the card is and does is decided well in advance of hiring an illustrator. They want to be sure you have a solid understanding when you get started.
