Re: software engineers, do you need someone who already knows what they're doing, or can they learn a bit on the job? Not a junior by any means but not Senior/Staff either.

It's tempting as the EE tasks Oxide solves are super interesting but I wish the role would contain more(any?) software aspects. Can't see myself ever doing just EE or just Software, esp. on systems like this.

i think an EE who is also interested in touching software is exactly the type of person we’d like to talk to — we always love people who can move between different layers of the stack! i’ve seen folks from the EE team working on firmware, and we also have a lot of soft logic as well

i will note that embedded systems/firmware is kind of the one role we’re not currently looking to hire for specifically though, we have a lot of folks in that particular niche. but i think our ideal EE is someone who’s not afraid of software.

Everything I've read and listened to about Oxide makes it sound like a great place to work! Given how specific these roles are, I wonder about the careers of people already at Oxide? The roles are using very advanced technologies and it's not clear where I'd even get the experience to be qualified.

i.e. there are lots of places using Rust now and some companies have similar roles for senior devs listed, but I've never seen a Junior Control Plane Engineer role listed lol. Even with 7 years of embedded experience I have no visibility on an on-ramp to train into that tech.

It’s true that right now we effectively only hire very senior people, it comes with being so early. But also, like, while “junior control plane engineer” may not be a common job description, sole people build control planes for fun. That is, we care about what you can do not previous titles

Awesome, thanks. Came to being good at what I do by a weird road, and that sometimes makes getting past filters like that tricky without personal connections, so I'm glad to see a hardware company taking the approach you do.

we get a pretty overwhelming amount of applications, but if your friend never heard back it may have slipped through the cracks somewhere. i’d encourage them to resubmit if possible.

Never before was I so sad that I have no experience in Rust.
I have been following 0xide since 2018 or 2017 and I was so excited because I used to run a large cloud made of other vendors’ stuff and it was such a pain in so many ways.
If I count alone the hours spent on getting IPMI & SNMP metrics

anywhere, we’re a very remote-first team. we do have an office in Emeryville, CA, but more than half of the company is based outside of the bay area.
