Recently read an article from a woman who was homeless for several years in her teens. A medical emergency landed her in the hospital where a doctor asked what she wanted to be. A doctor, she said. Well, I hope you’re my colleague one day, the doc said. She marveled that someone saw her humanity.

Everyone knows someone who is “this close” to being homeless. As mental health is more open, most of us can identify those people. If you can’t, be an advocate, because someone you know is likely suffering but afraid to share with anyone.

I read this the other day, and just yesterday finished “The Four Winds,” a novel by Kristin Hannah about the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, migrant workers and homelessness in America. Both were devastatingly enlightening and should be required reading.

He’s in my state of RI. The Boston Globe did a follow up and he was helped by a family in the town south of me. And he’s from the same town as me.

This piece, after all the other emotions, ultimately leaves me enraged at our society, our nation, humanity. I'm relieved people are helping, but millions will suffer and die under a system designed to crush them. "A Christmas Carol" is really a 21st century American horror story.

Thanks for sharing! I’m neurodivergent and that’s caused issues in life and career. (Thankfully its “just” ADHD.) Homelessness isn’t that far of a stretch for much of this country.

All true. Also, ADHD is chronically under diagnosed in girls. Big big issue.
