Look, I live in Toronto and we all have relatively small circles in life. I'd never speak for a country. That would be arrogant.

Another thing is that the general sense of dread that Ovechkin, with his ties to Putin, was going to beat his goal record now seems to have been replaced with indifference.
He was quick to speak up in 2002 for Canada at the Olympics. Not so much now.
I don’t think he would dare pick a side. Way too risky either way.
However, as a Canadian Icon, the fact that he hasn’t defended Canada against Trump’s lunacy is what hurts most.
He has absolutely misread the room. And it is likely too late to regain the love.
