Eviction bans. Debt repayment pauses. Health insurance coverage guarantees. A dozen or more, including actual stimulus.

A progressive economic policy package that helped people. I was baffled when they just... ended.

People rightly associate the loss of those measures with Biden.

"But, inflation!" I don't concede this point. It's not at all clear that any of these policy levers contributed significantly to inflation compared to the extreme supply chain shocks caused by the pandemic.

But okay, hypothetically, stop the direct stimulus if you must. Keep the other things!

Instead, the party saw Biden's unpopularity and seemingly concluded that he'd been too progressive and they should move back to the centre-right. That mistake became obvious pretty quickly on election day.

Now the error is clear, and so is the policy prescription for next time.

It seems incredibly unlikely to me that the party will collectively come to that conclusion. It’s not how they’ve responded to electoral losses before.

I can only hope that turnover in leadership results in better outcomes... but I wouldn't be surprised to see the party keep moving right instead.
