-H5N1 has a very high fatality rate
-there exist non-mRNA vaccines stockpiled, but not commercially available
-they need two doses
-there's a highly effective commercially available one for POULTRY
-Tamiflu is somewhat effective, but we don't have enough of it
There's not enough vaccine to curtail a genuine global human pandemic. Therefore, mRNA is the best hope for rapid production of new H5N1 vaccine.
There's a WHO plan underway to produce mRNA vaccine especially for low income countries.
As an American, I am incredibly concerned. If this breaks out under the next administration, we will likely not have access to the vaccines we're stockpiling. Even if we did, half the country wouldn't take it, or even wear a mask, so no herd immunity.
Do you think the recent case in BC signals a mutation for human to human contact? How long for Cda to gear up to get vaccines, esp if we can’t count on the US anymore?
Serious question: does it help to start making an mRNA vax from the strain that currently causes human cases? Or is the existing too far from the one that eventually causes the pandemic in humans to be worth the effort?
Depends on what part of the virus they target. mRNA codes for one or more specific proteins. They need to identify which proteins are specific to the influenza virus in question and is unlikely to change in subsequent mutations.
Last I was informed, the strain of H5N1 infecting dairy cows in the USA is almost identical to the one used in the stockpiled vaccines. When the mutation occurs to allow sustained human to human transmission, I strongly suspect the virus will still be extremely similar to the vaccine brand.
