periodic reminders (until we make these clearer):
"likes" are public here;
mutes and account email are not-public but your PDS can see;
alt-text exists in post schema, but not yet in clients;
links and mentions can be "gotchas" for now;
posts and follow graph are public

Ah! I missed this -- I tested with VoiceOver and it reads the alt text for me. Can you let me know what your expected behavior is so I can fix it? 💙

Expected Behavior:

1. Visual indicator of the presence of ALT text.

2. Anyone able to put it up to read.

There's a web version of the visible alt text badge on Twitter, also. I wouldn't consider it to take priority over changes improving the screen reader experience. The badge is more for awareness among users who aren't blind or low-vision. https://help.twitter.com/en/using-twitter/how-to-use-alt-gif

When users with good vision see the ALT text indicator, that encourages them to add ALT text for blind or low-vision users.

Screen readers are already working with ALT text within HTML.

Educating most users about the ALT text with a visual indicator is IMPORTANT.

My screen reader picked it up in the Android app but yeah there's no visual indicator if a post has alt text or ability to read it as text afaict

💭 for web app, maybe we could add 'title=' on img in addition to 'alt=' for mouse hover? I can't remember if that has a negative a11y impact
