But yeah, scammers are SO HARD to separate from genuine actors through automated detection; the false positive rate is always high enough to murder you in the court of public opinion.

And then people realize you get suspended if you create an account and say the transphobia phrase, so a million of them rush to make an account and say the transphobia phrase because humanity has never met a beartrap it doesn't want to stick its collective dick in, etc.

So I'm kinda trying to take people through the chicken sexing training here! It actually fascinates me how quickly people can learn to spot "this isn't right" even when they don't know WHY; the hardest thing is to stop them from overfiring.

The T&S team is suuuuuuper overloaded this month with the influx and they're sort of desperately paddling madly under the surface to keep up until they can staff up more. They *are* removing them; I listed and reported a shitload of lottery winner scammers last night, and about 80% are gone today.

It's just a little haphazard because the volume of reports is such that there's probably a LOT of signals they're urgently triaging on to find the most important, and those kinds of emergency triage efforts are always extremely seat-of-your-pants: you miss a lot and catch up later.

Totally agree. Did your team ever consider building some kind of peer-to-peer trust system? Where you could choose seeing content of people you trust and see who they trust - maybe even on specific topics? I think there is tons of value in this, tho probably shdnt be publicly visible to everyone

This is a really great case study, because organizing even a single ‘layer’ deep can make it incredibly hard for individuals to effectively navigate social media grifts.

I think community curated block lists are really really effective tools to level the playing field.

The problem with relying on collective response is that many people aren't aware of the patterns. We need experts to identify the patterns, communication channels to make the public aware of the patterns, and companies willing to implement ways to counteract the bad actors.
