Half the reason I go on hikes instead of just walking around my delightfully walkable town is that my brain craves the problem solving inherent in walking a difficult trail. I love figuring out how to cross a swollen stream or which way to climb a rock field.

This is exactly why I like mountain biking. Road cycling is kinda boring cause you’re just riding the path but mountain biking is wild and scary and sometimes you lose the path completely.

My wife talks about how good the seasonal nature of teaching is for her brain. Not just school year/summer, but trials of new students in the beginning, moving to particular units, etc. Sounds (relatively) great.

I'm in higher ed now and I totally agree. The predictability of the semester cycle is so dope. Any time it sucks I'm like "ok but it *must* end on Month and Day because the students leave" and then it changes

This is why I actually kinda enjoy my job as an internal IT auditor. There's enough different areas I work in, I have a predictable 8 wk cycle, and I get to find out where there are a bunch of problems and describe the risk. Worst part is socializing action plans with management tho, all politics bs

I'm just thinking of the school year as starting at harvest time, then the kids for the year are the storage crops through the winter, let's say they're biennials so in spring they've gone to seed and you're planting them for the next teachers.

I often think about how, counterintuitive to many peoples assumptions, we find evidence of prehistoric peoples creating the conditions for disabled members of bands to continue to travel with everyone. My guess is that there was no expectation of frictionlessness, so why would care be different?

I think about this a lot with languages. How its so good for our brains to be multi lingual, and how learning languages later in life is an effective way of fighting dementia.

also how feelings of embarrassment stop us from using our brains in these ways becauase we worry we'll look foolish.

As much as I intuitively know friction is good for me, it seems clear that because our economic system allows capital to traverse language, borders, and distance at literal light speed, it ingrains a feeling of total failure when I struggle to move at such speeds (I'm a terrible language learner)
