If you want to mention things that are off topic - go for it, it’s your 1 or 2 minute testimony. But make sure to start and end with the bread . What do you want them to do. Make it as clear as possible. Don’t be vague. Write it down in advance and practice. It’s ok to be nervous. Drink water.

You’ve probably never been to city hall, you’ve probably never gotten up in front of a few hundred people to talk about zoning policy. That’s ok. People want to know why you care. Speak from the heart. Is it your kids? parents? Climate change? Long commutes? Housing instability? Make it personal.

Keep it brief.
Less is more.
Make your ask clear.
You don’t have to fill the whole time.
A succinct anecdote can be memorable.
It’s ok to be nervous. Don’t let the anti-housing people be the only voices that show up.

Bring snacks. Brings snacks to share. Wear thick socks and layers and bring water. There’s a bathroom right next to the council chambers and another on the ground floor. If you need the elevator ask for it, you don’t have to take those awful steep stairs.

And if nothing else, please don’t be ageist. There will be a generational divide in the room of pro vs anti housing voices and it might be tempting to say something you’ll regret but it won’t make the council listen to you if you’re an ass.
