In the late 80s, the Oregon Citizens Alliance pushed Measure 8, which sought to roll back anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ state employees. Its chief petitioner was Mike Wiley - who is now the publisher of Hoodview News. /2

Measure 8 was later found unconstitutional. But the OCA was not done; the group’s Measure 9 sought amend the state constitution to define homosexuality as “abnormal, wrong, unnatural and perverse.” Measure 9 flopped statewide, but later communities across the Oregon green lit local versions. /3

30 years later, anti-LGBTQ conversations similar to those the OCA sparked here are a part of the public discourse in a way they haven’t been in decades. The difference now? The media landscape. /4

Depressing sentence I wrote : “Oregon once enjoyed a vibrant ecosystem of local newspapers producing fact-based reporting. That has disappeared.” In this environment, Hoodview News passes as a community newspaper filled with full-page ads for car dealers, restaurants and local businesses. /5
