We already know that we can flexibly distort the confidence we communicate to others in social settings. For instance, @urihertz.bsky.social & co have shown how we strategically deploy confidence when giving advice to gain influence or protect our reputation.

In this paper, Einar developed a new metacognition task - inspired by work on group decision making by Dan Bang. Participants proceed from making perceptual decisions alone, to decisions with a 'partner', and then alone again.

Across experiments, we find robust evidence for 'confidence matching' - with participant confidence ratings gravitating towards those of their partner. Critically though, we find that these biases in metacognition persist even after the interaction is over.

We find that these empirical patterns can be well-explained by a new metacognitive learning and prediction model - which uses prediction errors from the self and from the other to learn about the uncertainty we should expect to feel.

All in all, while we tend to think of metacognition as a generally private affair, these results reveal how our public interactions with others can leave an imprint on our introspection of our own minds.
