The heart and soul of Canada is with our First Nations. Our country is perhaps unique in now recognizing and acknowledging the importance of our First Nations, and working to correct past wrongs. More work is still needed, but there is more than a century of bad policy to still be undone.

It feels like an extreme failure of imagination. Reminds me of one time at a conference after I did my presentation a settler asked something like: "but if Canada didn't exist, what would replace it?"
I said something like: "fuck if I know, but we could at least try to think of something different."

I worry that the combination of incessant socialization as: (🇨🇦 > 🇺🇸) + (Canada = good) therefore: nationalism = good creates some weird calculation that breaks so many Canadian minds so they just default to the status quo. Meanwhile, I'm like: "I have stuff that's older than this 'country'...."

Reverting to "Reconciliation" dialogues won't help either. What we face, collectively, is far bigger than that. We have to address the rot at the core of your nationalism itself, and getting mad that Indigenous people don't see much difference between Canadian or American colonizers won't help you.

If you are serious about resisting American fascism, imperialism, colonialism, all the isms... think about also resisting the Canadian versions of the very same thing, at home and abroad. Lots of yous already do this, and that's great! Just don't fall into the nationalist trap that's taking hold.
