can't answer for russia (US sanctions might affect compliance levels), but for country X, if there's a regional labeler for that country (for russia, it's @moderation-ru.bsky.app), it can label you or your content as problematic. in that case, users from that country won't see you or your content.

you can just use a VPN software to trick the client. but even that is too much friction for a regular person.

also, it’s always possible for governments to ban VPNs at protocol level at some point.

after a quick test with the help of turkish users, it turns out country-level restrictions in bluesky are only implemented in the official app currently, and they don't apply to third-party apps if they don't implement them.

the risk bluesky is facing by objecting to government censorship requests is a blanket ban from that country. @jay.bsky.team probably considers this a fair compromise to keep bluesky accessible from an authoritarian country as it doesn't have enough international recognition to make a stand for it.
