Crazy stuff from the Russians. There is no way Russian forces can create a bridgehead and hold it. As demonstrated it becomes a ‘turkey shoot’ for Ukrainians. Can’t think of a better to engage Russian forces and destroy them completely.

It was a long shot attempt at a crossing. Heavy shelling to the area they intend to advance is a standard Russian strategy. Both things can be true.

„couldn’t even reach the middle of the river“. That implies they managed to get somewhat close to the middle, which is concerning. They shouldn’t be able to set foot on that bridge (or what’s left of it).

That just not how war works. First you need to spot someone. You can not see everything 24/7. Most likely drones that move that monitor. Then you have to shoot at it. People might need to get into positions. Aim and then it takes time for shells and drones to arrive.

Or... people on a narrow path with no easy way to turn around and cold water underneath, which could sink vehicles and people look like a much better target. I suspect it was the intent to them them reach halfway thru.
