I agree with Merz in Germany, Trump and Vance staged the blow up with Zelensky. I also believe Zelensky anticipated it. IMO Zelensky continued the conversation with Vance because he thought a dramatic argument will motivate European leaders to fill the gap in lost military aid from the US / Trump.

Trump told reporters that this was the last question, which was the signal to Vance to begin the argument with Zelensky. Then Vance escalated the argument further by injecting anger into the situation. Then Trump played off of the anger from Vance to use anger in his own response to Zelensky.

Love your work but slightly disappointed this conversation in placing the onus of keeping a civilised dialogue entirely on Zelensky. The Ukrainian popular approval of his handling in that difficult situation is the most important measure. Even if the military costs is high, maybe too high.

Stimulating discussion as usual, but I’d invite panelists to think about a key variable that mostly went undiscussed: Putin.

The Russian dictator’s judgement has been erratic for some time. He made a wildly reckless gamble to help Trump get elected in 2016, & then, well…not nothing, but not much.

Putin’s gamble back then gave him the most pro-Russian President since World War II at least. He didn’t ask Trump for that much afterward. Had Putin resolved to attack Ukraine while Trump was President, the war really might have only lasted three days.

Trump just handed Putin another enormous gift. He’s willing to be a chump for the dictator — but there could be limits to how much he wants to be seen as a chump. If Putin won’t change anything, about Russia’s air campaign, demands on Ukraine, etc. he could wear out his welcome even with Trump.

You missed the elephant in the room. Externally it looks like a coup is ongoing in the US and there has been no push back from congress. The US has threatened to invade its allies and praises russia.

We were freaking out before the Munich Vance speech & are questioning whether we can trust America.
