Pre-inauguration, they said changes were spurred by the Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling and concerns that HHMI programs may be deemed illegal by the current justice system. As a non-lawyer, I asked how bad it was to get sued vs preemptively killing programs, not a popular question.

The Hannah Gray program had already undergone a major change. In 2022,
"The goal of the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program is to recruit and retain individuals from gender, racial, ethnic, and other groups underrepresented in the life sciences, including those individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds'
