Hollar's panorama of London before and after the fire. Main masonry damage is a collapse at the W end which, following John Evelyn's account, obliterated the newly-built Inigo Jones portico, and also "the lead over the altar at the East end was untouch'd" - the roof survives at the E gable end

But the fun part isn't imagining London Cathedral what it was like before it burnt out, it's its context when it was constructed in the 1080s as plausibly the largest Romanesque church ever built!

Old St Paul's high-roof wall plate height was broadly equal in height to imperial Speyer (c.31 m) and only exceeded in France by Paris Cathedral in the 1160s. Which is 80 years later!

Anyway it was an absolutely massive building by any measure. I ought to re-edit and reupload this to have my second version which has better camera movements but whatever, gives you an idea how it fits over Wren's building.

Easy to dwell on the lost, but London's massive retro-vaulted nave with yawning galleries (think Norwich but bigger) opening into great rayonnant New Work and enormous glazed E wall (think Lincoln... sort of). Must've been overwhelming

Shame about the timber scaffolding that doomed it to The Fire
