SO MANY good tips in replies to this! I'm saving them because I hope to take a long Amtrak trip one of these days, maybe with my bike to get off and ride around, stay for a day or two in a town, get back on and keep going. Trains are awesome.

Q#2: For folks who've taken a long distance Amtrak roomette (or room) trip in the US, what did you wish you had, or would you suggest is something important to bring? Chicago to Dallas, about 36 hrs iirc.
