guide to buying a laptop:
1: do you *really* need the portability? if not, just get a pc for cheaper
2: dont get a hp
3: under no circumstances do you need one of those "gaming laptops", unless you want a free heater for double the cost of a normal pc
4: maybe you should get a macbook

5: never get a laptop that has 4gb of ram / intel celeron
i have a laptop with 4gb of ram that is from the windows vista era and it still runs perfectly fine as long as you don't run windows on it :P
Proxmox is an interesting option, but I wouldn't run it on a machine with very little memory.
very cool
In my experience they aren’t at all robust which is a big minus for a laptop and their battery life is poor.
it's better than 4gb but still meh
Also like the Amity pfp :3
i don't buy apple tech just bc i have personal beef with it in general, my current laptop has windows 10--
There's a reason Apple ran a whole ad campaign just to say "Mac can do MS Office now"
Think Different.
I dare to disagree heavily, I was in these non existent circumstances for 5 years
but i do like how smooth and optimised iphones generally are
Anyways, it died recently, what a shocker
:)
I'd highly recommend a Snap dragon elite plus.
18 hour battery life, and super fast.
last time i checked they were... low
:)
I got a gaming laptop when I worked as a charter coach driver with lots of downtime during the day.
I'd call it a valid use case.
Hotspot on, let's game.
Coach has tables.
Not much space in a cab.
Now, as a main rig, yes they're not great.
So, not "under no circumstance"
I will fight you on that.
1. Can it run Linux?
1.1. If it has a GPU, is it AMD?
2. If you need a GPU, get an Ultrabook.
3. If you want portability + gaming, get a Steam Deck
4. Don't buy a MacBook. It's just overpriced and bloated Unix.
- typed from my framework laptop
Thanks in advance! 😁
Probably good it was on sale when I got it and was the same price as a similar machine without the touchscreen.
Dogshit laptops.
Acer might also be down here.
2. Dual channel or upgradable to dual channel memory
3. Hinges are visible and sturdy
4. Decent CPU- No Pentium, Celeron, Athlon (usually leaves just Intel Core and AMD Ryzen)
If someone can automate GPTK without setup, like Proton, then I'll start shilling Apple.
6: *Definitely* don't take out a loan for your laptop (I'm looking at macbooks again)
I bought a pc recently instead of replacing my MacBook after it was stolen, I thought I'd get more use out of it (video editing, llms, gaming) and I've been kicking myself daily. Windows is teerrrriiibbble to go back to once you've used a Mac! Windows laptops are even worse
Good for …. I’m thinking
A gaming laptop it is for me
Nods,
Nods,
Nooooo, it was a trap!
Almost had me there.
Also, the hell with a MacBook. I like having ports still.
Great machine never had any issues with it even installed the latest 24H2 update without the issues everyone else is reporting
1) 99% of (Mac) users would be served by a 2020 or newer MacBook Air
2) buy used! If you prefer Windows, eBay is full of ex-business laptops (ThinkPad X1 etc.) that will serve you better than anything from Currys at same £
3) Minimum 16GB RAM for future proofing sake (on both options)
I believe it will be the last laptop I'll ever need to buy. When i'm at a desk, I'll pair it with my logitech K780 keyboard I've had from the best part of a decade
2. Welp...
3. True
4. Apple is a dystopian ecosystem that traps you and doesn't let you in, and they are way too expensive IMO and I'm definitely not poor
- don't need portabilty, since I never leave the house ✔️
- it's a HP ✔️
- it's a gaming laptop ✔️
- I already have a MacBook from work.. ✔️
What am I looking at here?
Also the build was shitty.
- Make sure it's sturdy.
- Make sure it's well ventilated.
- Make sure what you'll use it for.
F apple forever. 🤪
bought a steam deck
Some that I would add:
-check the second hand market for business laptops(some of them are well made and cost effective)
-decide what you are willing to compromise(battery, top performance)
-aim for lenovo,dell,framework
Also: I almost always choose either a Thinkpad or an XPS. Awesome flagship laptops!
2. Discover tuhat you need more power and buy a gaming laptop
3. Admit you were wrong from the beginning and buy a pc
Up to 250 watts at full power, 120 on silent mode gaming(barely heard). like 40 on browsing. Pretty convenient in travel.
(Also, as someone who has owned a Macbook, I heavily disagree with 4 as ours got hacked big time😭😭😭😭😭😭)
1: Can you *really* afford a laptop?
2: get a thinkpad
See 1. get a mac mini or mac studio. They are even touting a new mini with M4 etc
If you want to open 3 google tabs and run out of ram then get a chrome book.
(I just didnt have the space for a whole ass tower)
64GB+ RAM
2TB+ SSD
will look into it more
Cost about £400 rather than £1600.
They last me 3 years, I use them for Photo and video editing on the move, no problems 😊
Professional Workstation Laptops often have similar performance, but they charge you out the ass just to get rid of the RGB and Gamer™ aesthetics...
mine lasts 3-4x as long now but I can still tap into the higher power when I need it for college
never buy a macbook

•that's a PC that includes a display and a keyboard•
they won't get hot unless you play games or do rendering with the dedicated GPU, they use the APU the rest of the time, just like a regular laptop
MacBooks on the other hand
if you have the money go for the higher end, if you don't have the money but need some extra potency, gaming laptop is a good option
so what i said isn't universal and there is some pretty bad brands and/or models
Should we go with 38% of the Desktop's price on a liquid cooled 24GB GeForce RTX 4090 for faster crypto mining, plus 55% of its total price on a 32'' 8K monitor?
My Chrome browser uploads GIF files using the Image file button on the left, btw. What I'd like is PDF files added to Custom.
1. Buy a used Dell Latitude E5450
2. Put in a new SSD and 16gb RAM
3. Install Ubuntu 22.04
4. Frolic in the meadows.
