This happened local to me but my worry is that if I was witnessing I couldn’t do much besides calling 911 because I’m not strong enough to fight and I could die.

Which is why training is so important (I'm also local). I definitely can't fight a grown man, but I can loudly assert myself, direct bystanders, and organize those who are otherwise paralyzed (because I have training).

Yes I am very loud and commanding and I’ve been scary enough to get teenage boys to stop harassing my workplace, and I do make sure people are safe. We just had a fire drill at work (public office) and the first thing I did was make sure people were capable of going down 5 flights of stairs.

There were a few folks with canes and wheelchairs so I coordinated with security to have them in areas of refuge, and then I was good to evacuate.

Absolutely correct. Training and a plan create the confidence to intervene. Knowing how you will leverage advantages (confidence? recording the scene? your physicality? your knowledge?) and how you will protect yourself if needed makes a difference.

Learning first aid and first responder skills makes people more confident in a medical emergency. Learning de-escalation tactics and intervention strategies will make you more confident in crisis sorts of emergencies.

about true danger, but do it anyway. Emotionally put yourself in a place where you just refuse to stand by and imagine how you are going to respond. Over and over. It dramatically increases the chances that you WILL respond, and that others will join you. It’s just one way to get ready.

(OK, people are mentioning upstander training, and it was mentioned in the OP. I’d actually never heard of it before! But obv that’s going to be more effective than self-laudatory daydreaming. Still, imagining was all I knew to do and it’s made me less hesitant.)

This kind of training applies to intervening in other bad situations as well, e.g. sexual harassment/assault so please take it! Learning to be the help that someone may need is important.
