Unsure why it's in quotes? The klez renaissance was decades ago at this point, and there are punk-klez, klez-electronica, and yes, klez-hiphop fusions (as well as klez-jazz, that's old news at this point?) And yes, it was the music of the people /street -- but that doesn't mean it was hip-hop. +
That musical tradition has its own history, lineage, culture, story that doesn't need to be equated with ours to be valid, nor vice-versa. We can honor each on their own terms. Hip-hop eg has roots in griot & other traditions as much as all the streams of US Black art & poetry & culture,
